When to see an Infertility Specialist

By August 15, 2018Infertility Causes, Treatments

The American Society for Reproductive Medicine recommends that women under 35 years of age see an infertility specialist after one year of trying to become pregnant. Women over 35 should be seen after 6 months of trying. Fertility can decline rapidly and we recommend that egg quality be determined by ovarian reserve testing as soon as infertility is suspected.

Diagnosing and treating infertility is complex and Infertility specialists undergo extensive subspecialty training. A four year medical degree must be completed followed by a four year residency in obstetrics and gynecology and a three year fellowship in reproductive endocrinology and infertility. Once this training is complete oral and written boards must be passed to achieve board certification in reproductive endocrinology and infertility.

There is often more than one cause of infertility and male infertility is present in 50% of cases. Fortunately, there are effective infertility treatments ranging from medications, intrauterine insemination (IUI), to advanced reproductive technologies (IVF).

When selecting a fertility clinic be sure the physicians are board certified. Our staff includes five board certified reproductive endocrinologists, infertility specialists.

Consulting an infertility specialist increases the chances of having a baby, usually in shorter time, and at less expense. A specialist will evaluate both partners to identify the cause(s) of infertility.

We feel that frequent communication with you doctor is essential to quality care so you will see your infertility specialist at most office visits. We encourage you to review patients’ evaluations of our specialists on our website and the online physician rating sites. Videos discussing each doctor’s feelings about helping patients are posted on the biography pages.
